Primary action

Also called primary CTA

The single most important action on a screen, given the strongest button style so people can spot it immediately.

Say it to an AI

Pro plan pricing card with a clear visual hierarchy: the price is the focal point (big, bold, with "/ user / month" small next to it), the plan name becomes a small eyebrow label, and there's one filled primary CTA. Features stay quiet.

Pro plan pricing card for a project-management app.

Study A · the weaker one
Study B · the stronger one

Why: Both cards end with the same solid indigo 'Start free trial' button; in B it is the next thing to pop after the price, in A it competes with the oversized plan name.

More ways experts use it

  • Delete-project confirmation dialog with exactly one primary action: a solid red "Delete project" button, clearly styled as a destructive action. Cancel is an outlined secondary button placed before it, with both right-aligned in standard button order and initial focus on Cancel.
