Truncation

Also called ellipsis

Cutting off text that doesn't fit its box and ending it with '…', so the layout stays fixed but part of the text is hidden.

Say it to an AI

Up next queue with fixed-height rows: cover art, then the track title as primary text and performers as secondary text, duration right-aligned. Long titles truncate to one line with an ellipsis and show the full title in a tooltip on hover, so row heights never change.

How an expert would brief the stronger version of “Playlist queue”.

'Up next' queue in a classical music streaming app.

Study A · the weaker one
Study B · the stronger one

Why: B cuts 'Symphony No. 9 in D Minor…' at the row's width; A lets that row run onto three lines.

  • Exit-survey reasons as a horizontal bar chart sorted by share, with each full reason written beside its bar and the percentage at the end. No label rotation and no truncation (ellipsis): choose the horizontal bar chart precisely because the category names are long.
